With Victor Raphael’s images of “From Lead into Gold” as a backdrop, Mark J. Reid, senior radio astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, presents The Universe: Art and Reality. He’ll discuss mapping the spiral structure of the Milky Way, black holes, and the formation of the solar system, using some of Raphael’s pictures and real or simulated elements from space. Victor Raphael will also be present for Mark Reid’s talk.

While walking in the woods, Paula McCartney would look at birds but they were always too far away, moving too quickly, or not in an appropriate composition to photograph. So, she says, “I decided to take control, buy my own (craft store) birds, and create idealized scenes that I had fantasized about, where songbirds perched patiently on trees as I moved through the woods and photographed them…This work explores how nature and fabricated elements can combine to create a scene that questions what is natural, and whether being so holds any intrinsic importance. I use photography to explore the idea of constructed landscapes.” McCartney, of Minneapolis, MN, has a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography from Empire State College in New York and a master of fine arts degree in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited widely and her work can be found in many collections.

Henry Horenstein is a widely published and exhibited professional photographer and the author of more than two dozen books, including the classic texts Black & White Photography and Beyond Basic Photography, and monographs such as Honky Tonk, Animalia, Show, and Close Relations. Horenstein is a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he has taught for more than twenty years. He lives and works in Boston.
This first digital textbook by legendary photography teacher Henry Horenstein, Digital Photography is the best guide yet for aspiring digital photographers, essential both for photographers transitioning from film to digital and those learning the art of photography for the first time.

Jane Paradise will discuss her photography project When I Was Young I Was Considered Beautiful: Portrait of Norma Holt. She introduces us to Norma Holt, a ninety+ year-old prominent New York and Provincetown (MA) photographer who continues to actively pursue her art and enjoy all of what life brings her. Through Norma, Paradise tells the universal story about aging and how one person creates a meaningful life despite a deteriorating physical state.

Designed to provide seniors with an opportunity to socialize and hear area photographers speak about their work. The program is FREE for seniors and their friends. ALL ARE WELCOME. The program begins at 3:00 pm with socializing and refreshments in the Griffin Museum’s Main Gallery, followed by a brief & intimate lecture. The program ends at 4:15 PM.
Both Elisabeth Neville and her father, Joseph Neville, are fascinated with capturing the essence of a person through art; she in photographs and he in sketches. Join the Nevilles as they discuss their joint exhibit of their work, Eidetic Image on view at the Griffin’s Aberjona Gallery.
The Rev. Dr. Joseph Neville dabbled in art as a child and later, while serving overseas in the Army, became interested in photography. While in the seminary, he served as youth minister at First Church UCC, in Winchester. Elisabeth, a native of Winchester, MA, now lives in Marblehead, MA. She teaches photography and design-based courses at NortheasternUniversity.

Splashion Gallery Talk with Howard Schatz

Howard Schatz presents a gallery talk with Splashion as a backdrop. Copies of H2O and Schatz’s just published book,With Child, will be available for purchase at the gallery.
The Griffin’s satellite gallery is on the first floor of A Street Frames. It continues to be a collaboration between the GriffinMuseum and Digital Silver Imaging of Belmont. The gallery is being called the Griffin Museum by Digital Silver Imaging and replaces the satellite gallery in Belmont.
Splashion celebrates the unexpected eruption of the mix of water and fashion in fashion editorials spanning 60 years. Internationally acclaimed veteran photographers featured in this group show include Martin Mankasci, F.C. Gundlach, and Martine Franck, on loan from the Howard Greenberg Gallery. Howard Schatz built an underwater studio to create his Underwater Studies Series featured in his book, H2O. Capturing completely submerged models, dancers, and performers his ethereally graceful and cheeky energized poses are described as “a visionary celebration of movement and form.” His large format, flush mounted color images in this show are courtesy of the Staley Wise Gallery. Also exploring the wonders of water is New York-based fashion photographer Jodi Jones. A veteran runway shooter, her ad work graces Times Square billboards, and editorials in Vogue and Vanity Fair. Swedish photographer Mikael Jansson has shot ad campaigns for Dior and Calvin Klein. His fall/winter Ferragamo ad campaign is featured along with select Vogue editorials. Also included in the exhibit is the work of Bob Packert, Sadie Dayton, and Conor Doherty.

Educational Opportunity
with Neal Rantoul & Lia Rothstein
November 11 – 13
Join renowned landscape photographer Neal Rantoul and PHOTOSTOP’s director and photographer, Lia Rothstein, who will assist during the weekend, for a unique photographic weekend on beautiful Nantucket during Veteran’s Day weekend. The island is enchanting in the fall; the leaves are off the trees, the island is quiet, and the slanting light is dramatic.
The workshop will begin on Friday evening with a “meet and greet” that will give participants a chance to speak about their aspirations for the next couple of days. On Saturday and Sunday the workshop will include shooting at off-the-beaten-path locations around Nantucket, learning about Neal’s use of Aperture for file and workflow management, one-on-one critiques and instruction by Neal and Lia, the expertise of a local photographer who will guide us to unique locations around the island, time for sharing images as a group, and a talk about Nantucket’s unique architecture by a local expert.
The workshop will conclude after lunch on Sunday to give participants free time to enjoy the island or to head back home. This workshop is geared for those who are familiar with their cameras and know how to use many of their camera’s controls.
$650 tuition. Limited to 10 participants.

The Griffin Museum of Photography has announced the recipients of its 6th Annual Focus Awards, which will be handed out at the Exchange Conference Center on Boston’s waterfront Oct. 1
The museum created the awards in 2006 to recognize individuals who have made critical contributions to the promotion of photography, resulting in a greater awareness of the photographic arts among the general public.
The awards are given in three categories: Lifetime Achievement, Rising Star, and New England Beacon.
The awardees are Dr. Alison Nordstrom, Eileen Gittins, and Susan Mosser.
“Each year the Focus Award selection process is a humbling experience and an exciting challenge. As always, we’re very fortunate to be in such wonderful company,” said Paula Tognarelli, executive director of the Griffin Museum. “Moving this event to Boston is a significant milestone for the museum, and coupled with the new satellite gallery at A Street Frames in the South End it provides new opportunities and further expands our reach.’”

Award Presenter – Bill Hunt
The award is given to an individual whose ongoing commitment to photography has a far-reaching impact.
Alison Nordström was born in Boston, educated in public schools and at Boston University. She traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia in her 20s and early 30s, including an overland journey from Turkey to India, a five-year stay in Japan, and a long walk through Indonesia.
Since 1979, she has worked in museums of art, history, ethnography, and photography, focusing simultaneously on contemporary photographic art and 19th-century vernacular photographs.
On return to the U.S., Nordström found her interests were in cross-cultural understanding (and its lack) piqued by early photographs and films made or used with ethnographic intent. This led to jobs in the cultural sector: first as director of the Robert Flaherty Centennial Film Festival in Brattleboro, Vermont, and later as a research associate in the 19th-century photograph collection at Harvard’s Peabody Museum.
In 1984, Nordström became director of the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center; in 1991 she was appointed founding director and senior curator of the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, Florida; and in 2002 and 2003 she was director of the New Hampshire Humanities Council.
In 2004, Nordström became curator of photographs at George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, NY., a position that was expanded in 2008 to include director of exhibitions.

Eileen Gittins
Founder, President, and CEO of Blurb
The award is given to an emerging force the photographic community is watching with great enthusiasm.
Award Presenter – Joyce Tenneson
Eileen Gittins is founder, president, and CEO of Blurb, the creative publishing and marketing platform that enables anyone to design, publish, market, and sell bookstore-quality books. She has been at the intersection of Internet, consumer, and enterprise software, imaging systems, search, and digital photography throughout her career.
Blurb was born because Gittins wanted to create a beautifully-designed and produced photo essay book – which looked like a book you’d buy at a bookstore – but she only needed 40 copies. It turned out to be a remarkably painful, expensive, and time-consuming experience. She thought that was unfortunate, so she founded Blurb.
Since its 2006 launch at the DEMO emerging technology conference, Gittins has led Blurb from a startup to a high-growth company, reaching profitability with revenues of more than $45 million in 2009.
In 2010, Blurb was ranked as the fastest-growing media company on the Inc. 500 list. With more than one million books produced, well over one million registered users, and a global footprint that extends to 72 countries, Blurb continues to experience high growth in challenging economic times.
Gittins says she’s had the most fun at Blurb, which is saying a fair amount as she’s lived and worked all over the world with Kodak; as vice president at Wall Data; as CEO of Personify and Verb; outside board director at Qbiquity and Popular Demand; and even a stint at a boutique investment bank.
In her spare time, Gittins still photographs, is a voracious reader, avid traveler (both physically and virtual), and former competitive swimmer who occasionally dips back into the pool.

Susan Mosser
Special Service Vice President of the
New England Camera Club Council
Award Presenter – Barbara Rozavsky
The award is given to an individual whose work brings prominence to the local photographic scene.
Susan Mosser has organized photographic programming for single events, all-day seminars, and larger, multiple-day conferences throughout New England and the U.S. for more than 30 years.
Her willingness to volunteer on behalf of the photographic community and a can-do attitude have earned her recognition from several organizations. Mosser has served as program chairman for the Photographic Society of America (PSA), the New England Camera Club Council, Yankee Photographic Society, and the Greater Lynn Photographic Association. She also has served as president of all those organizations, except the PSA.
She has organized and led photo safaris to Africa and across North America, and her eye for an image has earned her four stars as an exhibitor in PSA color and nature slide exhibitions.
In 1978, Mosser began doing organizational work for the Greater Lynn Photographic Association, an organization the North Shore of Massachusetts. The association awarded her its highest Honor of Service Award and an Honorary Life Vice Presidency for her numerous contributions, most notably for chairing the Greater Lynn International-America’s largest, single division PSA-approved color slide exhibition-for more than 32 years. The exhibition is an annual event, which receives entries from more than 1,300 photographers from around the world and is affiliated with national and international organizations such as the PSA, The Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA), IIWF of Germany, and the Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique (FIAP).
In 1993, the PSA awarded Mosser an “FPSA,” a fellowship in the society for holding a variety of responsibilities, most notably serving as program chairman for multiple international conferences.
The New England Camera Club Council also awarded her an honorary membership for chairing several committees, serving as council president, and chairing or co-chairing its annual, three-day photographic conference at the University of Massachusetts on eight occasions.

Living Legend Harold Feinstein to be honored at Griffin Museum of Photography Focus Awards
We’re thrilled to let you know that at its forthcoming Focus Awards (Saturday, Oct. 1), the Griffin Museum will give a special tribute to legendary photographer Harold Feinstein, honoring his 60-year career. It will be presented by Jim Fitts, teacher, lecturer, curator, noted photographer and mixed media artist.
